Aerobic treatment unit (ATU) service in North Atlanta
An ATU is a small mechanical treatment plant: an air pump feeds oxygen into a treatment chamber so aerobic bacteria break waste down far more completely than a conventional tank. Cleaner effluent, smaller footprint, higher nitrogen removal — and moving parts that need attention.
Services
- Scheduled maintenance visits (typically twice yearly) and the required service records
- Air pump / blower diagnosis and replacement — pumps last 5–10 years, ~$300–$500/yr (certified-contractor maintenance; no state operating permit as in FL) is the typical operating cost including the permit
- Alarm response: a blinking or sounding alarm usually means the air pump has stopped; the system reverts to anaerobic treatment within days if it isn't fixed
- Effluent quality checks and float/dosing adjustments
- Pumping — an ATU still accumulates solids
ATUs are less common in North Georgia than in Florida, but they're increasingly what the county approves when red clay or rock fails a conventional design. Georgia's DPH rules require maintenance by a certified contractor; if you inherited one with a house, find out who's been servicing it and when the air pump was last replaced.
Common brands serviced: Clearstream, Jet, Norweco, Hoot, Fuji Clean and other units approved for Georgia. Installation and warranty work require manufacturer certification beyond the standard contractor license — ask which brands your contractor is certified on.
All work is performed by Georgia DPH-certified septic contractors who are licensed and insured.
